This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
