In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
